gambling the creative

December 13th, 2011 . by Elias

Over the years I’ve learned that when submitting to festivals, in general, more is better than less. So far we’ve submitted to 62 film festivals here in the states and abroad and we have no plans to stop there. This may seem like an excessive number, but what drives this choice particularly is the constant proliferation of independent films all over the world.

The rapidly growing number of indie features has not only contributed to the birth of more film festivals, but a generally very high number of submissions per event, ranging from the hundreds to the thousands, and all competing for a comparatively small number of programming slots. So essentially, whether your film’s the greatest thing since “devils on horseback” (pitted dates stuffed with the smoked cheese of your preference, wrapped with bacon, drizzled with maple syrup, and finally baked/broiled to perfection), unless you have a sure in, it’s essentially a crap shoot so do what you can to improve your odds. Making a film is hard, but the hardest part of all is getting it seen by as many people as possible and getting it the attention it deserves. So when you’ve wrapped principal photography have a drink, and when you reach final cut have a whole bottle because now the real work begins!

Keep on keeping on, and enjoy the ride, bumps, warts, blisters and all.

p.s. Though not so common here in the states, many festivals abroad actually offer free submission for their events so unless the $4-$6 cost of sending your screener abroad via airmail is too steep, why not go for it.

Winter is finished…

…and from out of the long cold night into spring comes the weary traveler… Well kinda anyway, heh! The start of 2011 was one of those I’ll probably never forget…

…your heart will burst, and your life will be turned on its head:) Everything you ever heard is true and everything you haven’t heard will blow your mind!

Meanwhile, our other baby GUT is still in audio post – having in the 11th hour been forced to find a new home for her needs. It was a hellish few weeks in transition, but all is now well and for the best. Look for more news soon as we move towards completion under the supervision and guidance of the extraordinary and talented Chvad SB who is also scoring the film.

In other GUT related news – I just did an interview over at the Extraordinary Movie & Video Guide. More details on past, present and future plans including GUT and other projects. Thanks to Esa over at EMVG for featuring us again. You can also read Esa’s review of our weird and wacky feature anthology LovecraCked! The Movie.

Lastly, I’m very pleased to say that I just finished the 3rd draft of a new thriller, working title “DK”, to be directed by my good friend and frequent biff juggernaut collaborator Nick Basile. The film is currently slated for production this summer. More updates soon.

BiFF’s 1st somewhat alt post

Many things are happening as always. The 90 min ‘Gut’ cut is having all sorts of cool things done to it with sound design and musical interpretation. ‘With Anchovies…Without Mamma‘ will be screening at The Other Venice Film Fest this Sunday at 1:30. I’m writing another script (alt future/reality, but with themes that will be meaningful for past and present I hope). Of course the writing does not go uninterrupted as we re-arrange the entire apartment for a little progeny of our own this Dec.

‘Alone’ is about to complete shooting, excited to see how it turns out.

Also, working with my friends ‘The Qualia’ on creating a music video for ‘Volcanoe’ (that’s how it’s spelled on the track list;) one of the songs off their new album ‘Secret Weapon’, now available most places.

Vote now!

November 4th, 2008 . by Elias

Hello everyone,

Normally posts on this blog tend to be about our film and related media projects, but today I feel compelled to be one of the many thousands of voices that’s reminding you to go out and vote for our next president. This is an important election for our good ol’ US of A, and probably one of the most important elections many of us will vote in, so do your duty and get out and vote!
